Street style: DANIELLE

DANIELLE

DANIELLE

Occupation: Student.

How would you describe your personal style?
I’d describe it as very free-spirited, not really caring what anybody else thinks.

What inspires you to dress this way?

A lot of the things that I find around the house I put to good use. I think that being yourself is very important. I think it’s the only way you’re going to survive in this teenage life.

What are you wearing that’s from around the house?
Like these chains, they’re from nowhere special. They’re from around the house.

What can you tell me about the handcuffs?
I think this is pretty trendy nowadays, but I like them. I think it makes you look outrageous.

You’re wearing a lot of accessories. Is there a particular reason for that?

Just because I like it. It stands out. It’s colourful.

Is there a message you’re trying to tell people with your fashion?
Not really. It’s not like I’m asking everybody to look at me when I walk. I just wear what I like, because I like it.

What do you like to do for fun?
I like to go out. I like to go to shows. Moshing is a lot of fun. I love it so much. I think it relieves a lot of tension. I usually end up getting kicked out of places. I’m pretty crazy for my age. I’m pretty loud and obnoxious. I live life to the fullest.

What do you want to do in the future?
It doesn’t have to be special, as long as I make my mark and be remembered. I’d like to try writing. I like to write short stories. I’m not a big fan of the poetry.

Any final words?
Whether I want people to look at me or not, they do. And by looking at me, I guess they can tell I’m very loud, I say what I want to, and, yeah, authority can bite my ass.

ANA/JOHANNES

ANA/JOHANNES

Occupation:
A: Fashion designer.
J: Public relations assistant; will study international fashion management in Toronto.

How would you describe your personal style?
J: I think I would describe it as European. It’s a European one. I choose the clothes I like, and they have to reflect my moods.

What’s your mood today?
J: I feel good! I just arrived in Toronto, so I’m excited.

Ana, how would you describe your personal style?
A: Mostly I wear my own clothes. So, this is my own design. And, I just wake up in the morning and think, “Okay, it’s a dress, or just jeans, or a t-shirt.” There has to be some little details every time, which makes the outfit perfect… I’m inspired by Asia, because I live in Shanghai. Women there are much more feminine, as in Europe. They wear more short trousers, or skirts, or dresses. So, I think that’s really interesting.

How long have you been a fashion designer?
A: One year, but I’ve been studying and living this since my childhood. So, actually, I was born as a fashion designer, I think.

Johannes, tell me about your outfit. Where did you get your shirt?

J: This is vintage. This shirt, I’ve had it since my childhood. So, it’s very retro. I found my clothes mostly in Cologne, and Berlin. Those are the best towns to shop in Germany.

What’s the street fashion like in Germany?

J: I think you mix a lot, between high fashion and low fashion, and vintage. It’s kind of a mix.

How important are accessories in your personal look?

J: I don’t like accessories every day. I think accessories are important, if you use them right.
A: I think without accessories, my outfit isn’t complete. So, I need them every day.

What about hairstyle?
J: It’s really important. I really hate bad hair days, but when I have a bad hair day, I wear a hat.
A: It has to be different every day. I don’t like hairstyles which are the same every day. Sometimes I have curls, sometimes I make it straight. It depends on the outfit. It has to match. So, the whole look, makeup, hair, shoes, bags, everything makes one outfit complete.

What are some of your other interests?
J: I really like artwork. And I really like to write, to go out, and listen to music, like Electro or House.
A: I also like Electro and House. Music makes me creative. If I’m dancing, I’m thinking about fashion. And it’s so often that I’m dancing on the dance floor, and I have to stop to go home, because I have to make some clothes.

What are your ambitions?
J: I want to be self-employed. And to mix fashion with different areas: with music, with art, with creative writing.
A: I will build my own label, for sure. I want people to wear my clothes and think about the same things as me, (when it comes to) clothes.

Street style: KATRINA

KATRINA

KATRINA

Occupation: Illustrator.

How would you describe your personal style?
It would definitely reflect my personality. It’s creative, sexy. It’s something that leaves a lasting impression. It’s something that expresses my moods, something that expresses my interests.

How long have you had this particular look or style?
Since I was a teenager, because that’s when you sort of get into the rebellious stage and you want to start to express yourself.

From day to day, does your style vary or is it kind of the same?
It has the same core, but it does vary. It’s elegant, comfortable. It has to be comfortable. Function and fashion play equal roles to me.

Where does inspiration come from?
As you walk down the street, as you maybe look at television, or flip through books and magazines, you always come across things that inspire you.

Where did you get your scarf?
This scarf belonged to a friend of mine. His grandmother passed away on Valentine’s Day two years ago. And she was from England, and she had a house full of clothes and trinkets. Everything was from England. I noticed a bag of shawls, and I looked through them. I took many of them, because they were so beautiful, but this one in particular I wore, because I quite often wear blue on Mondays.

What are your other interests? What fascinates you?
I like to read books on magic and alchemy. For instance, one of my favourite authors is Fiona Horne. She’s a modern-day witch. Also, (one of my favourite books is) “Face Forward”, by Kevyn Aucoin, the make-up artist. I love to read the “Wu-Tang Manual”, and I love to listen to Wu-Tang, because they are lyrical geniuses. I love poetry, I love music.

How did you become an illustrator and what do you enjoy about it?
Well, I started drawing when I was a kid… After the years went by, the drawings started to get better. And ‘til this day, I still love to draw. I love to draw people in cartoon. Cartoons. They’re a lot of fun.

What are your goals and ambitions?
I’d like to start my own empire.

What will that consist of?
It will be love, happiness, faith, trust, courage, justice, perseverance, endurance, lots of cartoons, lots of music–All the ingredients we need to make this world what it’s supposed to be.

Any final words on personal style or street fashion?
Be sure that what you’re wearing is reflecting positive energy. We all have our bad moments, our bad days, but don’t use fashion as a weapon. Fashion is something positive. Use it to express the positive things in you.
