MANDE/ELENA

MANDE/ELENA

>MANDE

Occupation: Fashion designer and bartender/waitress
My style: Rock and roll glam.
My style influences: Definitely ‘70s glam rock.
Deciding what to wear each day: Whatever looks cool.
Favourite colours to wear: Red, black and white. They look good together. Black and white matches everything.
Shirt: I made it.
Boots: The boots are from New York. They’re really old and gross, though.
Belt: It keeps my pants up really well at work. It’s actually Elena’s belt. We swapped.
Interests: Sewing, listening to records, drinking with Elena. I like to travel, too. I’ve been to Europe. I’ve been all the way across America.
Favourite cities: Los Angeles, Boston.
Favourite food: Pizza.
Goal: To be able to live off my clothing line and make a lifestyle out of it.

>ELENA

Occupation: Cashier
My style is: Poor kid who shops at Value Village.
Deciding what to wear each day: I kind of try to match things, and see if it flatters my figure somewhat.
Outfit: I was actually really hungover today, and I thought that I looked kind of stupid when I went out of my house, but…
Hair: My friend Leslie does everything to my hair. Since we were little kids, she’s been cutting my bangs, and stuff like that.
My style influences come from: Television.
Interests: I like painting and drawing. I take care of my pets. I hang out with Mande. And I like watching cartoons (South Park, Aqua Teen Hunger Force).
Favourite food: Pizza.
Goal: I want to go to animation school, and then make cartoons. I think that would be the best thing ever.
More about me: My friends are the biggest influence in my life. They are my life.

Street style: M’RANDA

September 29, 2007

M'RANDA

M'RANDA

Occupation: Student.

How would you describe your personal style?
Kind of somewhere in between goth and punk.

How did you decide to wear what you’ve got on now?
These are my favourite pants. I’ve had them for a long time, and they have most of my favourite things attached to them. And the shirt, I made it a few weeks back, and I really like it. And the arm things, I made them too.

When did you start making your own clothes?
A few years ago. I just got tired of wearing stuff that everyone else was wearing.

What’s important to you about not wearing stuff that everyone else is wearing?
I don’t want to look like everyone else. I don’t like it when people come up to me and go, “Hey, I have the same pants as you!”

So how do you feel when you’re wearing this?
It’s cool. I like it because it’s definitely different, and people always look at me and come up to me and compliment me on how original I am, or how they’ve never seen clothes like mine.

Where did you get your bag?
My grandmother bought my bag for me. She thought I would like it, because it’s sparkly and it has a big skull on it. And I do like it exactly for those reasons. She got it for me for my birthday last year. And it’s really useful, because I can shove just about everything in it, and it all fits in there.

Tell me about your piercings.
Most of them signify different important things that happened to me in my life. One of them is when my sister got her first piercing. One is when my best friend got her first piercing. The nose ring was from when I turned 13.

What’s your current obsession?
Right now, I’m learning how to play bass guitar. I’ve been doing that a lot. I’m also learning how to do contact juggling, which is different than regular juggling. It’s where you have these big, clear heavy balls and you basically roll them on your arms. And you learn different motions and stuff, and it makes it look like they’re weightless. It’s really, really cool.

What do you want to do in the future?
After high school, I’m going to go to circus school and become a professional clown. Other than being in the circus, I’d also like to be a journalist. I think that would be really cool. And maybe someday start my own clothing company. Like a t-shirt company, where I would have t-shirts that say all different, cool things on them.

Street style: JENNY

September 16, 2007

JENNY

JENNY

Occupation: Student, studying industrial design.

How would you describe your personal style?
I’d definitely say I’m maybe a bit more retro. Retro, hip. Sometimes I’ll dress a lot more conservative, sometimes I’ll dress funky.

What can you tell me about what you’re wearing? Your jacket, for instance.
I like it because it always draws in everything that I’m wearing. I always feel like I can throw it on and it always looks good with anything. It was actually a present from my sister, and she’s in England right now, so it reminds me of her, too. It’s just a fun jacket.

Sunglasses?
I just really like them because they have that vintage feel to them.

Hairstyle?
I dyed it myself. It was actually a bunch of different colours before. I dyed it like a reddish-orange tint, and then I went down to a yellow. And then I just bleached it yesterday. It’s just something to be different.

Where do you get inspiration for your style?
A lot of it has to do with the music that I listen to. And, because I’m Korean, I think a lot of it, subconsciously, comes from our culture, too.

What kind of music do you like?
Actually, it changes quite a lot. Right now, I’m listening to a lot of 80’s, Retro, House, and a lot of the classic Rock and Roll stuff. Some Hip-hop here and there, but it’s just very selective.

Where do you find most of your stuff?
I like vintage stores. I like second-hand stores a lot. I don’t think that you have to pay a lot of money to dress well, or to dress comfortably, or the way you want to. So, yeah, I like to bargain shop.

Is there something you would never wear?
Pink. And I don’t wear a lot of dresses and stuff. Not that I would never wear it, but on a day where I’m going to school, I’m not going to get really, really dressed up.

What are your hobbies and interests?
Well, I paint. I draw. I love to build things. I like to dance. Anything fun. Anything to socialize with friends, or anything interactive. That helps me to be creative.

What would you like to do in the future?
I don’t think I’m going to do one set thing. I have a few things that I’d like to do. I have goals. Before I die, I’d like to learn how to DJ, for instance, which has nothing to do with what I’m doing at school. I’d like to design a fashion line, write a book, but ultimately, I want to be a designer.

Street style: CAITLIN

September 8, 2007

CAITLIN

CAITLIN

Occupation: Model.
My personal style is: Bohemian. I just love (this style) because it looks really nice, and it’s also very, very comfortable.
Dress: Actually, I borrowed it from my friend. She’s my best friend. We call each other wives, because we’re that connected. And she just let me borrow it. But it’s just something I would wear anyway. Nice sleeves, and it’s loose fitting.
Hat: I got it at Le Chateau, and I bought it for $10 dollars, because I’m a cheap shopper.
Sunglasses: I wanted red sunglasses for so long, and I think (this) style suits me the best.
How I became a model: I got scouted. When I was 18, I did a hair show for my friend. And a model was there, and she introduced me to my agent. And it’s been way better than I had ever expected in my life.
Negatives of being a model: The fact that you have to be 20, and exercise, and watch your weight, and eat healthy always.
Interests: I love to dance. I like to make arts and crafts.
Favourite colours: Green and red. I like green because it’s calming, and I like red because it’s vibrant.
Favourite music: Independent (Modest Mouse, Interpol, Kings of Leon, etc.)
Favourite books: The one I’m reading now is called Girl, Interrupted. I’ve seen the movie before, but the book is always so much better than the movie.
Favourite food: Sushi.
Favourite drink: Rockstar (see picture).
I really want to: Open my own flea market.
Final words: Be yourself, and love yourself, and be true to yourself, and just dress how you want to dress.
